Dubai 2022 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships

The 2022 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships are set to be held from 16 – 27 November 2022 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Hosts United Arab Emirates will welcome over 300 international wheelchair basketball players representing 16 men’s and 12 women’s teams to compete over twelve days of competition at the showcase event.

The approved dates of the competition were decided following intensive consultation with the IWBF Competition Commission and hosts.

IWBF President, Ulf Mehrens, said: “We are pleased to be able to confirm the dates of the 2022 IWBF World Championships for later this year. We continue to work with the hosts UAE to ensure we will be able to put on a world class event as the ultimate showcase for wheelchair basketball and Paralympic Sport, and provide the highest-level environment for our elite players.”

Taking pride in the fact that Dubai has successfully hosted championships amid the Covid pandemic, Thani Juma Berregad, Chairman of the Dubai Club for People of Determination, said:

“It’s a very proud moment for UAE and Dubai to host such a prestigious event. The Wheelchair Basketball World Championships is the second marquee event that Dubai will host this year, kicked off by the World Para Archery Championships in February 2022. With all precautionary measures in place, we are confident of hosting a successful competition with world-class facilities on display. We aim to make it a memorable event for all participating teams.”

Majid Rashed, CEO of Dubai Club for People of Determination and Asian Paralympic Committee President, added:

“Dubai has already set benchmarks by organising successful events amid difficult times. And hosting the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships will yet again put Dubai on top of the world sporting map. It will also help further grow the sport in the region, moreover in Asia. We look forward to some great action in 10 months’ time from now.”

The qualification tournaments for the 2022 World Championships began with the European Championships in Madrid, Spain in December 2021 – five men’s and four women’s teams from Europe qualified. The rest of the qualification tournaments will take place in the upcoming months with Africa’s representation being decided at the Africa Championships taking place 23 – 28 January 2022 in Ethiopia. The Asia Oceania teams will be decided in March 2022 in Thailand at the Asia Oceania Championships, whilst the final places to be confirmed are the Americas which will be determined at the Americas Cup in late July 2022.

The World Championships is the showcase international competition for wheelchair basketball contested by the best men’s and women’s national teams from across the world. The event is held every four years with the previous Championships in 2018 taking place in Hamburg, Germany.
